Dr. Erjia Ge’s Sabbatical Visit to the University of St. Andrews, U.K., Fosters New Collaborations
From May 1st to 23rd, 2024, Dr. Erjia Ge embarked on a sabbatical visit to the University of St. Andrews, U.K., where she was appointed as a visiting scholar at the Medical School. During her stay, Dr. Ge was invited by Dr. Fernando Benitez to deliver a lecture at the Bell Edwards Geographic Data Institute on May 14th
In her talk, Dr. Ge presented her cutting-edge research on avain influenza and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), showcasing the innovative use of multidisciplinary approaches and multi-source data fusion technologies. The presentation generated significant interest, opening doors for potential collaborations on grant applications and discussions about joint graduate programs between the University of Toronto and St. Andrews.
We look forward to exploring these exciting new opportunities. The abstract of her talk is included below.

Abstract: Health risk surveillance can be constrained by imprecise, incomplete, and uncertain information. Data fusion provides a rigorous approach to integrating multi-source data from various disciplines to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of risk modeling and prediction. This talk explores the integration of molecular biology, epidemiology, and geography to enhance infectious disease surveillance, while accounting for factors such as viral evolution, bacteria clustering, environmental conditions, socio-economic trends, and human behavior. We underscore the importance of combing knowledge from multiple disciplines to achieve more robust health risk surveillance and discuss the potential benefits for public health monitoring and response.
