NDVI
DATASET DESCRIPTION
The UK NDVI collection covers 2005–2020 and is derived from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service global 1 km, 10-daily product, version 3. The product uses SPOT/VEGETATION and PROBA-V observations. NDVI is a unitless index calculated from near-infrared and red reflectance; higher values generally indicate greener vegetation. The final available composite is dated 21 June 2020.
The source grid spacing is 1°/112, nominally 1 km, and files are indexed by ten-day composite periods. The product manual specifies a valid physical range of −0.08 to 0.92, with separate codes for sea and invalid observations. Values outside this range were removed from the decoded rasters before averaging, with a small tolerance for numerical rounding. Quality-flag layers were unavailable, so observations within the valid range could not all be assessed for reliability.
Annual values were calculated in R by giving each available valid composite equal weight at each grid cell, then clipping the result to the UK boundary. These are means of composite observations, not duration-weighted daily means. The 2020 panel uses January–June composites only and is marked with an asterisk. All panels use a −0.1 to 1.0 colour scale; its rounded limits encompass the product’s valid range.
