Ge-iSEE Health Lab Co-Organizes Symposium on Built Environment and Urban Health at ISEE 2023, Taiwan

Drs Erjia Ge and Kai Zhang co-organized a symposium titled “Built Environment and Urban Health in East-West Contexts” at the 35th Annual Conference of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from September 17-21, 2023.

The symposium focused on how various aspects of the built environment – such as air pollution, noise, light, green space, and access to safe water – impact health across different regions, highlighting the contrasts between East and West. Students from the U.S., Canada, and Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China were presented, showcasing innovative data and methodologies. These insights provide critical evidence for developing intervetions to address health inequities and promote sustainable urban health globally.

Symposium Highlights:

  • Dr. Ta-Chien Chan (Acadmia Sinica, Taiwan): Explored the joint effects of fine particulate matter and noise on metabolic syndrome.
  • Dr. Xiangqian Lao (City University of Hong Kong): Discussed challenges in studying the health effects of artificial light at night.
  • Ms. Emily Luy Tan (Dartmouth College, U.S.): Investigating airborne lead compounds as environmental risk factors for ALS.
  • Dr. Derrick Ho (City University of Hong Kong): Examined the association between the built environment and osteoporosis in Hong Kong.
  • Dr. Erjia Ge (University of Toronto, Canada): Presented research on greenness accessibility and its impact on childhood asthma in Ontario.
  • Dr. Kai Zhang (SUNY Albany, U.S.): Analyzed historical redlining and park use during the COVID-19 pandemic using big mobility data.

This symposium provided a platform to discuss the role of the built environment in achieving One Health in One Planet, aligning with the conference theme by bridging East-West perspectives and advancing healthier, more equitable urban environments.
