Andrea Portt Presents Innovative Research on Air pollution and Migraine at ISEE 2024 Conference

We are proud to share that Andrea Port, PhD candidate in Epidemiology, recently presented her groundbreaking research at the 36th Annual Conference of ISEE. Her poster, titled “Air Pollution and Migraine: Using Smartphone App Attack Records to Examine Environmental Exposures and a Transient Health Outcome”, highlighted a novel approach to studying the relationship between ambient air pollution and migraine events.

By utilizing smartphone app data to capture repeated case events of migraine, Andrea’s research opens new possibilities for integrating advanced technology into environmental health surveillance. The innovative method provides a more dynamic and continuous capture of health outcomes, promoting further understanding of how air pollution influences transient health conditions like migraine.

We commend Andrea on her impressive work and look forward to the broader implications her research may bring to the field of environmental epidemiology.

Abstract: Although migraine affects over 1 billion people worldwide, little is known about its environmental triggers. While some research has observed an association between ambient air pollution and migraine events, most studies have been limited to single pollutants and/or relied on emergency-department visit data. Our objective is to estimate the associations between air pollution and migraine events captured using a smartphone app in the province of Ontario, Canada.
